I live in Australia, so a description as well as the name would be appreciated.

Kind regards

You can use almost any type of general multipurpose adhesive, you will probably have to read the info to find out what type of material it will bond to which material.

It will have to bond hard surface materials to porous materials.

They do tend to change the names of some items sold across borders.

Here are some sites that have glue and adhesive descriptions that will be help full.

One very basic bit of info, if the canvas is laying down on a flat surface. you can use a thinner/liquid type adhesive. On vertical or overhead surfaces you will need a more viscus or gel type adhesive with support on the overhead one.

Again you will have to find the local country that supplies your own, but almost all of the above have information that you can google in your country and gets locations etc.

The last one is the worlds adhesive site for a wide range of information on sticking things together.

Don't know what they call your home improvement/hardware stores but most will have a large selection of adhesives that should do the job.

In Australia, isn't it "Hut Depot"?

Assuming your canvas is on stretcher boards, the glue also needs to be the type which has some flexibility when cured, which property should be mentioned on the label. Even a very tightly stretched canvas may move a little whenever the picture is moved.

Go to an 'Arts and Crafts' store and check their glue selection. The type of glue will depend on whether you expect the canvas to be rigid or flexible. There are many choices out there.

Re: What is the best glue to stick sea shells to canvas?

Why canvas? The reason artists went to canvas instead of wood panels as a substrate for oil painting is that larger sizes can be accomodated, and so that the paintings can be rolled up for storage and transport.

But with the advent of modern plywoods, it's much easier to span large surfaces with wood than before without risking cracks, and of course you're not going to be rolling these things up with shells glued on.

So why not make up a plywood panel, and forget about the canvas? It will be a lot easier to glue to without fear of shedding shells everywhere. You can use a range of glues, but since you're likely to have some gaps to fill, try the thicker-bodied ones that dispense with caulking guns, like construction adhesive or silicone.
