Its surface is gold leaf and acrylic paint, primarily pearlescent, evoking the elegant feeling of a god's finery. It takes visual elements of one of histories most rigid logical societies - Roman - and liquifies them so they flow and meld together and seem about to dissolve. Hence the title "Collapse of Logic". There, as in many other primal sites, a spiral is a constantly reocurring image. It is part of a series of works referential to many ways of seeing the earth and landscape - from radar images, thermal imaging, spiritual, and satellite photography to microwave scans. One wonders if Galileo, whose primitive telescope saw the moons of Saturn as only black dots, had an inkling of the incredible beauty that existed beyond his reach. Hence the series title "Beyond Galileo xxxxx". The lower book-like portion is covered with his drawings in relief.and the uppermost part is covered with silver foil stained with acrylic washes. The sculpture is bolted to a polished stone base.

1 comment Harry Powers 1086798287 Harry Powers http://www.sculpture.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=306

Posted by: Harry Powers

Description: This bronze relief wall piece, 35" W, uses Renaissance symbolism and an accurate 3 dimensional rendering of Galileo's drawing of Orion. The children relate it to whatever the current story is so sometimes it is seen as city lights,or a flight of birds, a group of people, or stars - hence its title "Fluent Galaxy". It is made of aluminum and enameled bronze. This 12' work of bronze and stainless steel takes an image of a Renaissance pilaster, warps it and floats above it an academic 2 point dreamlike perspective structure. During its construction a close friend died, Richard Tansey - principle author of the last 10 editions of "Gardner's Art Through The Ages". His intials were placed in relief and the sculpture is dedicated to his memory. Designed to stand in a courtyard it is in the collection of the San Jose Museum of Art. Vasari tells how Renaissance bankers and merchants commissioned so many works. It seemed fitting to allude to Vasari in this work which stands in front of a bank. So the design is like a manuscript fragment with a rough diagram of the plan of Florence incised on the surface. It was cast in place and is heavily steel and fibre reinforced and stood uncracked during the Loma Prieta earthquake while buildings across the street collapsed. The sculpture is carefully designed and positioned to have a fluid ever changing shadow pattern as the sun moves. The collaboration with the architects, Hawley & Stowers AIA was rich and articulate.

1 comment Harry Powers 1086784455 Harry Powers http://www.sculpture.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=298

Posted by: Harry Powers

Description: This 8' bronze piece stands in the lobby of the City Council Building in Dublin, Ireland and was inspired by the first and last lines of "Finnegan's Wake".
