Description: cast silicon bronze, spanish rojo alicante marble 19"x 6�"x 2�" The title to this particular work refers to the implied structure of the image, and can be considered a sharply-barbed retort in the never-ending �battle� of the sexes. An extended and more complete phrasing of the title might begin: "Darwin�s answer to his wife" in response to the idea of woman as object. Using an absurd twist on the theory of evolution as a starting point, the work takes the idea of the woman-as-object and reduces it to two green (ecologically-sound) pairs of lips presented on the background of irregular red (unbridled passion) marble.

Description: SIX UP, TURTLE DOWN 23"x10�"x3�" italian fossil pietra serena sandstone, cast bronze, turtle bone This particular piece of sandstone is a fossil imprint of an ancient streambed, and the flecks of mica and the reddish coloration are due to the impurities and silt washed into the stream millions of years ago. The sun-bleached sea-turtle bone (from the turtle�s plastron or chest-bone) was found on the coast of Georgia and carried back to the artist�s studio - where it waited almost twenty years for the �right� piece of sculpture. The lips are not modeled after a particular person's lips, but are a fusion of several sensual mouths that invite . . .

The imagery of human lips can evoke an emotional link with the themes explored in each work. Sometime the themes are playful and humorous, sometimes darkly foreboding, but always involving a degree of sensuality. This particular work lightly inquires about primal urges and how they are defined, where the unconscious fits into the scheme of our modern lives. The title of this piece could be loosely translated as "before the time of thought; some remains of . . ."

Description: GODSPEED BARSOOM: DEJAH 12"x28�"x16�" italian red, white alabama, spanish black, belgian black marbles A friend and I were discussing titles, and he suggested that the veining in the red marble looked like a satillite photo of the planet from orbit - and then he quoted the Apollo astronaut who said "Godspeed Earth." I said, "Godspeed Barsoom" and he looked at me without comprehension, he had never read any Edgar Rice Burroughs. The conversation turned . . . to Dejah Thoris and John Carter, Martian airships, thoats, adolescent fantasies about red princesses, etc. Godspeed was also the name of one of the colony ships for the original Jamestown settlement.

Description: FLOATING TO OSIRIS: WHAT WAS 8"x28"x11" gray and black marbles, limestone, rosewood, copper, linen, lacquer Osiris, one of the gods of ancient Egypt, fought with his brother. After his brother killed Osiris, he cut his body up into little pieces and threw them away in different places. Osiris�s son and daughter collected most of the pieces and put them back together so Osiris could be reborn. There were still some pieces of his body that were missing, and that is what this sculpture is about - because we all lose parts of ourself as we live our lives.

Both the twins who founded Rome did not have a sense of humor . . . when Remus joked about the walls of the city-to-be, dour Romulus killed him. While Remus was more-or-less forgotten, Romulus went on to become a god. Sometimes it pays to be alive.
