Harry Powers ISC Member Registered: April 2003 Location: San Jose, CA Posts: 17	This concrete work was designed during a summer in Florence. it was commissioned by Bank of the West for their Santa Cruz, CA branch. Vasari tells how Renaissance bankers and merchants commissioned so many works. It seemed fitting to allude to Vasari in this work which stands in front of a bank. So the design is like a manuscript fragment with a rough diagram of the plan of Florence incised on the surface. It was cast in place and is heavily steel and fibre reinforced and stood uncracked during the Loma Prieta earthquake while buildings across the street collapsed. The sculpture is carefully designed and positioned to have a fluid ever changing shadow pattern as the sun moves. The collaboration with the architects, Hawley & Stowers AIA was rich and articulate.
