italian fossil pietra serena sandstone, cast bronze, turtle bone

This particular piece of sandstone is a fossil imprint of an ancient streambed, and the flecks of mica and the reddish coloration are due to the impurities and silt washed into the stream millions of years ago. The sun-bleached sea-turtle bone (from the turtle’s plastron or chest-bone) was found on the coast of Georgia and carried back to the artist’s studio - where it waited almost twenty years for the ‘right’ piece of sculpture. The lips are not modeled after a particular person's lips, but are a fusion of several sensual mouths that invite . . .
