When “Energy Loop” by Dirck Cruser was installed in City-County Plaza in Asheville, NC in 1982, it was Asheville’s first contemporary public outdoor sculpture. It generated the usual controversy, but became part of the urban fabric. Now (January 2006), after 23 years or so of weathering, it has degraded to a point that the city considers it a safety hazard and has fenced it off.
