I'm actually painting it today. I have molds I need to make, but the paint won't interfere with that.

I plan to cast one up in a full bronze. It's probably one of the first pieces I've been happy with.

Here are some pic's of a sculpture I did for Bowen Designs.
This is a Marvel comics character called "Medusa".
This is sculpted in Super Sculpey about 1/6th scale.
This will be produced as a painted resin casting.

A pleasure as always!!!! You are a master at the figure with the flowing hair or fabric. I love your witch from the Narnia series. This one is equally impressive.

If you don't mind a question that I'm sure you ge all the time, but I'd like to know how one goes about getting freelance work for people like Bowen Designs, Sideshow Collectables, ect.. Is it possible for a mostly fine art guy to work doing super heroes and stuff. I have a couple that I did a while back and every once in a while I feel like doing something different and so I do a super hero. Here's a thread I started a long while back but it has one of my super hero pieces in there http://www.sculpture.net/community/s...ead.php?t=3709 Check it out and let me know if you think I could get work with that quality of stuff.

Thanks Alfred I appreciate it.
I really like your super hero work. Especially the Hulk. looks like an original take on the character. Sure it's possible that a mostly fine art guy to work sculpting superhero stuff and the like. Although I've found that with the fine art community in general, collectors and galleries, don't really like to know that a gallery artist also makes 'toys and figurines'.

Lots of people post their work on the sculpting threads where people in the biz
frequent and network. Also e-mailing some images directly to the companies
always is a good idea.

Most the work one gets in this genre are sculpture that emulate or copy a certain well known 2D comic book artist style. That's what most collectors really want and get really picky about. I guess that's why it's called commercial art.

Had just a few days to sculpt a life size bust of Lincoln as a maquette for a Lincoln memorial public art entry. I then had it cast in plaster so that it would ship without getting damaged, unlike the clay model. I sculpted him without a beard because he visited this particular town in 1858, a couple of years before he became President and grew his whiskers.

Berinje' , Nicely done with the Abe sculpt. The attention to historical detail is also to be commended. It's the little things like that, that make really good sculptors. Really nice... Thanks for posting!!!

Berinje' - Very nice piece overall, and quick, too. Maybe I pay too much attention to eyes, but those strike me as weak in some way. Not sure just how - they seem to be a bit crossed, and I do find the interior detail a bit much for a work of this sort. A matter of personal tastes, probably.

here are some of my figures, one bronze, the stretchy face is latex and foam, the male head is a wax figure for ripleys Orlando, the last is clay done for a commercial for Iris Johansens novel about a forensic sculptor . I mainly do realism and surrealism. more on my website, ect.

I love the stuff everyone does here, is anyone in the seattle area? I am desperate to find other figurative sculptors to work with and share ideas.

Hey guys, thought I'd post this in here instead of starting a new thread. It's a portrait of a friend of mine who's a Marine. He stopped here on the west coast for three days (on his way back to duty in Iraq), and managed to find a little time to come out to my studio for a sitting. I only ended up with an hour and a half of actual "model time", so I had to do the rest with pictures. This is about 12 hours worth (not my fastest time...) but I think it's a great likeness. His Brother (my best friend) thought it was really cool and also agreed that it looks just like him. So with said here's the piece.

P.S. I'm doing a mold as we speak. I decided to do a "French Mold" which is fairly easy and I should have photos of the cast plaster in about a week or so, depending on how busy I get.

Nice job! I think the base needs some more thought. Obviously not the priority given the time constraint.

Glenn, I agree about the base. I actually changed it before molding to give the back side a bit more contours. I didn't post any side views so you can't see what I'm talking about, but when seen as a whole, it works a bit better. Not my best base either.

Chris, I'll shoot some pics and try to get them up next week. Sorry, no time for a tutorial this time.

Edit: The reason the portrait looks stiff, is not just because he's a marine and that's the way he normally stands. It's because I am up for a commission to do a solier coming home and I wanted to use his portrait as the head on the sculpture. By doing a straight forward portrait I can then change it and add more expression when I do the full figure (which will be 1/2 life) without loosing the scense of his character. At least that's my intention. I'm molding the piece because I told him I'd give him a copy as thanks for posing and to have a plaster copy on hand that won't really get damaged.

Okay, I open up the mold and everything looks good. The toughest part about a French mold is the cutting of the parting line (it is done by hand as opposed to using shims to seperate the rubber). A French mold also looks a lot like a matrix mold (and some people even call them matrix mold by definition). I believe the tradition matrix mold is where the piece is half embeded in clay and then the rubber is applied, then the piece is flipped, the clay removed and that side is filled with rubber. A french mold is made by creating the mother mold first and then filling it with the rubber. So here are the pics.

Great work! What kind of clay are you using there? Is it oil based, and which do you prefer? Oil or water based clay? Joel
